Overview

Defines the Data Matrix 2D barcode: the L-shaped finder pattern, the clock track, the data region, ECC 200 Reed-Solomon error correction, and the six encoding modes (ASCII / C40 / Text / X12 / EDIFACT / Base 256). Covers symbol sizes from 10×10 modules up to 144×144.

Why it matters for RFID

Data Matrix is the dominant 2D barcode for direct part marking, pharmaceutical serialisation (EU FMD, US DSCSA), and any application where high data density in a small footprint matters. GS1 DataMatrix is Data Matrix with FNC1 + GS1 AIs.
